Mr. Donahoe
Congratulations on your recent appointment as President and CEO. We wish you great success as you guide one of the world's most popular brands. And, through your eBay Foundation, it is also one of the most charitable. As your website states, "Giving back to the community is part of eBay." What you and your employees are doing is monumental, and we are proud to share your values.
We are the Canaan Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization that brings computer technology to developing countries in Africa. We are not seeking a grant but instead, used computers. One thousand used computers to be exact. It doesn't sound like a lot, and it isn't. But, as you could imagine, one thousand computers in a country like Kenya can have a greater impact than fifty thousand computers in the United States. Then, when we collect one thousand, we'll strive for one thousand more and continue to help create a critical mass of computer skill and an economic link with the world's leading economies. Perhaps, one day, the entire world will bea ble to "shop victoriously."
Since 1998, we have delivered hundreds of used computers to approximately seventy-five schools, orphanages, and game conservancies, serving tens of thousands of students in Kenya and Cameroon. We have witnessed a school's enrollment jump from fifteen students to two hundred virtually overnight when it received a dozen computers. Test scores rocket up. Jobs are found. Futures exist.
Mr. Donahoe, fifteen percent of the world's population lives in Africa, yet only one percent of the world's computers make it there. We ask for the help of your foundation and that of your friends and colleagues. We also believe we can have a profound impact on the health of our planet. By 2005, there were an estimated 70 million computers in ladnfills. These computers contain highly toxic materials that can leak into the groundwater or produce carcinogens. As a society, we must be more responsible with the old systems our new ones replace. As the Canaan Foundation, we offer a positive way to do this.
Brighter futures. A cleaner planet. The impact of donating used computers to African children who will more than double computer lives while improving their own is immeasurable; it simply cannot be overstated.
